Wood Revival

Engineered Wood Products Deserve a Chance at a Second Life

After working with reclaimed and salvaged wood materials for over 25 years, we are well-versed in working with wood as a reusable material.

That said, most engineered wood products end up in landfills after initial use. This list includes:

These products are often thrown into a dumpster during renovation, long before they’ve reached the end of their useful life period. We believe this is an incredible waste, and that wood products deserve a chance at a second life.

– Emma Kiel, Sustainability Director at Urban Evolutions

Our team is actively engaged in building a robust national reuse marketplace so interior finishes can be diverted from the landfill and reintroduced into the market. And while we can’t fully control what happens to our products when they are removed from a building, we design for circularity and provide guidance for removal and storage of our veneer and slat wood wall panels.

Urban Evolutions recommends our panels be installed with Monarch Z-Clips, which contain at least 75% post-consumer aluminum content and are 100% recyclable. This installation system avoids the need for adhesive and face screws, preserving the look and integrity of the panel. The Z-Clips can be stored with the panels, so new installation systems are unnecessary.

View our drawings for guidance on how to stack and store the panels for reuse.

We strongly encourage project teams to include this guidance in their closeout documents so the panels can be diverted from the landfill and reused at the next renovation or deconstruction project. Removal teams can reach out to their local reuse centers or online platforms for donation and resale opportunities.

We know wood wall panels have a place in the circular economy and can continue to bring beautiful, biophilic accents to new walls, ceilings, cabinetry, and more after their first use phase.
