Colorado Mountain Retreat

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Colorado mountains, this expansive retreat was thoughtfully designed as a gathering place for a large, multi-generational family. While the scale of the home allows for hosting and entertaining at a high level, the design-intent remained grounded in creating warmth, comfort, and the familiar intimacy of a traditional cabin.

A defining element of the project is the use of reclaimed wood sourced from the family’s home state in the Midwest—bringing a sense of history and personal connection into a new setting. These materials carry natural character, patina, and subtle imperfections that give the home an authentic, lived-in feel from day one.

Differences in species, milling techniques, surface treatments, and finishes create visual rhythm and prevent repetition. Hand-hewn textures sit alongside more refined planed surfaces, while varied finish and stain applications add contrast and depth. This layered approach allows each space to feel distinct while still contributing to a cohesive overall aesthetic.

From expansive gathering areas to quieter, more private spaces, the material palette adapts to scale and function—enhancing both the grandeur and the intimacy of the home. Exterior applications extend this same philosophy, helping the structure feel rooted in its environment while reflecting the craftsmanship and heritage embedded within.
