We ♥ “Industriel’s” Use of Reclaimed | Los Angeles

Have a look at this pretty little number. Industriel is, well, industrial farmhouse fab. Construction has been ongoing at 6th and Hope for the past 15 months, but partners Armen Hakobayan (Green Street Tavern) and Joseph Antonishek are finally prepared to share their urban farm cuisine meets country French eatery, mason jars and all.  The restaurant officially opens today, May 18th, at 5PM for dinner. Lunch to follow on Monday.

Flo Design Studio is responsible for the two floor restaurant’s playful rustic look. Reclaimed wood, exposed ceilings, rough and unfinished surfaces, metal embellishments and a gray/earthy brown palate give the space that Eveleigh/Gjelina natural lived in feel.

Reclaimed Maple Gym Floor
Our reclaimed gym floors make for one of our quirkier and visually captivating flooring options. Ideal for residential and commercial applications, these maple floors are sourced from gymnasiums occupying rural high schools to NBA Championship courts. Each still show the existing court lines randomly throughout. Available in Black/Red/Off-White Mix or Black/Red/Green Blue Mix.

Reclaimed Tobacco Maple
When Nike Sportswear at 21 Mercer Street opened in SoHo, New York, the names on the guest list included Serena Williams, Spike Lee, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, Travis McCoy, and Urban Evolutions’ 3 1/4-inch maple with original patina reclaimed from American Tobacco.Used for the wall, floor, and display treatments, our reclaimed maple, from American Tobacco’s Greenville, North Carolina, facility stood by with a stately Southern dignity as rappers and Wimbledon champions came together in a rare display of modern kismet.

Reclaimed Textile Maple
Now our maple floors have made it across the Atlantic and taken up residence as Anthropologie’s expands to Great Britain. The King’s Road, London location features many of our reclaimed materials including antique white oak, reclaimed pine, and this maple from a Virginia textile mill.

Featured Project – Terrain at Styer’s

Hand-Hewn Timber Skins - Think of it as architectural skin grafts. Okay, that's a little creepy. Still, our hand-hewn timber skins offer a great way of adding a thick textural appearance without the weight and size of full timbers.

Imagine the garden child of Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie. It’s here and its name is Terrain.

Material midwife? Urban Evolutions!

From hand-hewn timbers to tobacco lath pine to reclaimed mushroom wood, you can’t throw a potted hydrangea without hitting something from Urban.

Located just outside Philadelphia, Terrain at Styer’s is a utopia of flora, fauna, garden pots, outdoor furniture, and what we like to call the three T’s: terrariums, trowels and trugs. Basically they carry everything under the sun… for working out under the sun.

Now you can have a bit of Terrain, even if you don’t live within travelin’ distance of the city of brotherly love. Their website shopterrain.com offers an extensive array of there merchandise for online purchase… and free shipping on purchases over $100 for Mother’s Day.

Reclaimed Tobacco Lath - Thin pine sticks that were used to skewer fresh tobacco leaves and then hung for the drying process. Here we used them as a ceiling treatment at Terrain. The pine lath makes a great material for cladding walls, ceilings, or store fixtures to give instant warmth and character. The applications are limitless.

Reclaimed Mushroom Wood - These cypress and hemlock planks were used to grow mushrooms. They have an amazing texture as a result of the enzymes released during the mushroom growing process. This wood does not have psychedelic properties.

Reclaimed Whiskey Oak Skins - Old whiskey barrel staves clad the interior walls of the retail space. The wood is left unfinished to highlight the natural weathered gray appearance.

UE Project Feature – Schmidt and Matthei Residence | Chicago

As luck would have it, the housing bubble was at its peak in 2008 when Sarah Schmidt and Julie Matthei began house hunting for a home spacious enough for them to raise their three growing children.

“We had outgrown our place in Evanston, and our initial thought was that we wanted to remodel another old house,” Matthei says. Those plans changed when they finally found a wreck of house on an ideal, nearly lakefront lot in Wilmette. Rather than pass up the primo location, they decided to demolish and build their dream home in an eco-friendly way. “We were going to build a big house, and that’s not a very ‘green’ thing to do, so it was important for us to do it thoughtfully,” Schmidt explains.

According to their friend and builder Scott Simpson, eco-friendly projects are often good ones, for the simple reason that they require that all the contractors communicate with each other from the very beginning. “We’ve been banging that drum for years,” he explains.

Simpson knew the latest building techniques and had experience building with the type of reclaimed materials that were used throughout the home. For example:

●The hardwood floors and chunky stair treads were reclaimed by Wisconsin-based Urban Evolution, from a former Thomas Edison factory in Michigan.

●Old Pickle barrels from Vlasic were used to make the exterior siding and the barn-style closet doors in the basement.

●Most of the kitchen and bathroom tile throughout the house is French encaustic tile that was taken from the former Mallinckrodt convent at Ridge and Lake.

Reclaimed Wood Ties. Clever.

Turning waste materials into wearable products, San Francisco-based company Wood Thumb creates neck ties out of reclaimed wood found in barns and houses.

Called Wood Tie, each tie is unique as its colors, knots, nail holes and grain patterns vary, according to the original reclaimed wood piece it was made from.

Each tie is held together by an elastic cord, which runs length-wise through the tie and around your shirt collar.

It is lightweight, flexible and can be adjusted to suit your preference in length.
