Two years after classic Berkeley, California restaurant Great China was shuttered by a kitchen fire, they reopened in a new location.

The move prompted an opportunity for new design, and we were thrilled to work with Triquest Builders on this project.

The owners decided to go with a sleek and modern design that lets the food speak for itself. On the exterior, redwood cladding reclaimed from pickle tanks warms up clean lines of concrete and red metal framing. Inside the bar area, more redwood cozies up to a brick wall, while we used a select mix of walnut for the 30’ bar top, benches, and shelves.

“We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel, and we are not about gimmicks or frills,” co-owner James Yu said, adding that the pared-down restaurant design reflected the approach to the menu. “It’s high quality using simple materials. We have a local take on Chinese food using great ingredients sourced locally and showcased in our dishes.”

That works for us. Click here to read more about this story. Love the look of redwood cladding? Check out another example of how we used this material or, better yet, contact us for more information.
